BASICS/TERMINOLOGY

 

  • 2045 -  “tycoon" is a non-profit organization focused on creating an international research center where scientists will research and develop the technologies to make eternal life possible, by the year 2045
     

  • KURZWEIL — an inventor, futurist, director of engineering at Google
     

  • SINGULARITY - or technological singularity is the development of "super-intelligence" brought about through the use of technology. "Singularity" was first referred to by mathematician John von Neumann in the mid-1950s.
     

  • BRAIN PROTHESIS - or BCIs, also called brain-machine interfaces

  • MIND-UPLOADING - concept of "mindclones" — digital versions of humans that can live forever. She described how the mind clones are created from a "mindfile," a sort of online repository of our personalities, which she argued humans already have (in the form of Facebook, for example). This mindfile would be run on "mindware," a kind of software for consciousness.
     

  • ETHICAL DILLEMAS - Will everyone have an equal chance to drink from a fountain of youth?If people live longer but are miserable for decades, will views on suicide and euthanasia change?In an immortal society, how do you make room for new generations? Who will have access?
